Watch our video to find out how straw parchworks are made.

In a nutshell, Wheat Straw Patchworks are a form of patchworks made from wheat straws. Making wheat straw patchworks is an extremely complex and time consuming process, which involves around 19 steps from start to finish.

Wheat Straw Patchworks are an ancient Chinese art, whose history can be traced back to the Sui (AD581-AD618) and Tang (AD618-AD907) dynasties. During these times wheat straw patchworks were only made as tributes to royalty and the nobility.

In more recent years, local artists have shown their interest and started recreating and innovating this ancient art, aiming to reintroduce the beauty of wheat straw patchworks to the general public.

The artistic techniques used in straw artwork are borrowed from many other art forms, such as paper cutting, printing, painting and pyrography; however it is the advanced set of skills in paper cutting & pyrography that make straw patchwork so unique.

The use of the natural properties of wheat straw, such as its golden colour, sheen and texture, combined with the application of a myriad of artistic skills allow the humble wheat straw to be turned into stunning works of art.
